Water Supply

The Little Cottonwood Water Treatment Plant receives its water from two sources - Deer Creek Reservoir and Little Cottonwood Creek.  The water from Deer Creek Reservoir travels through approximately 35 miles of 69 inch concrete pipe until it reaches the treatment plant.  The water from Little Cottonwood Creek is taken about 1.5 miles upstream from the mouth of the canyon.  Before the water from Little Cottonwood Creek enters the plant, it is used by the Murray City Hydroelectric Plant to generate power.  During the spring months when snow is melting in Little Cottonwood Canyon and flows are high, there is often a lot of debris present in the water.  The water flows into the Plant's screen house where logs, leaves, and other debris are removed before it moves on to the inlet control building where it is mixed with water from Deer Creek Reservoir.
